No, and this distinction matters for anyone considering a caravan outlet as a shortcut. A 32A three-pin caravan socket delivers 32A at 230V, which is technically enough current to power a 7.2kW charger through a portable adaptor. Some EV owners and even some general electricians suggest this as a simpler alternative. It is not the correct solution for daily EV charging and creates real problems over time.

The core issue is continuous duty rating. Australian wiring standards draw a clear distinction between intermittent and continuous loads. An EV charger running for four to eight hours overnight is a continuous load at or near full current. A 32A socket outlet and its associated circuit protection are not rated for continuous 32A operation. Standard outlet protection devices are calibrated for short-duration current spikes, not for sustained charging loads applied night after night.

The second problem is circuit protection. A proper EV charger circuit requires a dedicated RCBO providing both overload and earth leakage protection. A 32A caravan outlet on a standard circuit may have an MCB only, with no residual current detection. A standard RCD elsewhere on the board does not fulfil the same function as a dedicated RCBO for the EV circuit.

The cost difference between a caravan outlet and a proper dedicated EV charger circuit is relatively small. The correct approach eliminates both the compliance risk and the longer-term reliability problems that come from using a socket outlet as a permanent high-current charging point.

In many cases yes, but it depends on the existing cable's size, condition, and routing. If the original installation was done correctly, the cable from the switchboard to the charger position is likely 6mm2 or larger, protected inside conduit, and in good condition. When a charger is replaced with a unit from a different brand, the cable and conduit generally stay in place and the new charger connects to the existing termination point.

The factors that would require new cable: the replacement charger is rated at a higher output and the existing cable is undersized for the new load; the cable shows visible damage, UV degradation, or signs of water ingress along its run; the new charger's terminal configuration requires a different cable entry arrangement; or the existing installation was done without conduit and the bare cable doesn't meet current installation standards.

A replacement also requires a new Certificate of Compliance for the complete charger circuit, even if only the hardware changes and the cable stays. The licensed electrician certifying the new installation must confirm the entire circuit is compliant, not just the new unit. If the existing cabling is borderline, the responsible approach is to replace it at the same time rather than certify a circuit with a component of uncertain condition.

For most Manly homes where the original charger was properly installed, replacing the unit is straightforward. We inspect the cable and existing circuit during the site assessment for the replacement and give you a clear answer on whether the cable can stay before any work begins.

Usage logging built into the smart charger platform makes it straightforward to record how much energy each stay consumed.

Cost recovery matters more in a holiday let than in a personal residence because guests cycling through will draw varying amounts of power. Options include building a flat charging allowance into the booking fee, using the smart charger's usage data to track consumption per stay, or sub-metering the circuit and billing based on actual kilowatt hours. The right approach depends on your management setup and how you handle utility charges generally.

For Manly short-stay properties, a working EV charger is an increasingly relevant amenity for guests arriving in electric vehicles who would otherwise need to rely on public charging. Controlled load is an Ausgrid-managed tariff arrangement where the distribution network controls when power is available to designated circuits, typically overnight for six to eight hours. Hot water systems have traditionally used controlled load circuits to heat water overnight at a reduced rate.

An EV charger cannot be connected to a standard controlled load circuit. Controlled load circuits have no active supply outside the network operator's designated windows. The charger would only operate when the network has enabled that circuit, and you cannot override the timing because the switch is controlled by Ausgrid, not your switchboard. If you want the car charged by a specific time in the morning or need to charge at any point outside the controlled load window, you have no way to achieve that on a circuit you don't control.

The better approach for properties where tariff cost matters is a standard dedicated 32A circuit with a smart charger that has built-in scheduling capability. This gives you full control over start and stop times, lets you align sessions with your electricity retailer's off-peak hours, and allows you to override the schedule when plans change. Most current smart chargers can be programmed to start charging at a set time each night and stop at another time, which achieves the same cost benefit as a controlled load arrangement without surrendering control of when the circuit operates.
