A 32A three-pin caravan socket delivers 32A at 230V, which is technically enough current to power a 7.2kW charger through a portable adaptor. Some EV owners and even some general electricians suggest this as a simpler alternative. It is not the correct solution for daily EV charging and creates real problems over time.
The core issue is continuous duty rating. Australian wiring standards draw a clear distinction between intermittent and continuous loads. An EV charger running for four to eight hours overnight is a continuous load at or near full current. A 32A socket outlet and its associated circuit protection are not rated for continuous 32A operation. Standard outlet protection devices are calibrated for short-duration current spikes, not for sustained charging loads applied night after night.
The second problem is circuit protection. A proper EV charger circuit requires a dedicated RCBO providing both overload and earth leakage protection. A 32A caravan outlet on a standard circuit may have an MCB only, with no residual current detection. A standard RCD elsewhere on the board does not fulfil the same function as a dedicated RCBO for the EV circuit.
The cost difference between a caravan outlet and a proper dedicated EV charger circuit is relatively small. The correct approach eliminates both the compliance risk and the longer-term reliability problems that come from using a socket outlet as a permanent high-current charging point.

The factors that would require new cable: the replacement charger is rated at a higher output and the existing cable is undersized for the new load; the cable shows visible damage, UV degradation, or signs of water ingress along its run; the new charger's terminal configuration requires a different cable entry arrangement; or the existing installation was done without conduit and the bare cable doesn't meet current installation standards.
A replacement also requires a new Certificate of Compliance for the complete charger circuit, even if only the hardware changes and the cable stays. The licensed electrician certifying the new installation must confirm the entire circuit is compliant, not just the new unit. If the existing cabling is borderline, the responsible approach is to replace it at the same time rather than certify a circuit with a component of uncertain condition.
