Electric Vehicle Charger Installations
Crows Nest has a genuine mix of property types — freestanding homes on the residential streets and apartment blocks closer to the Pacific Highway. If you're in a house with a garage, the installation is generally quick and contained. If you're in a strata building, there's an owners corporation approval step that needs to come first, and we can walk you through what's required.
For freestanding Crows Nest properties, we check your switchboard capacity, confirm the cable route, and complete the full installation in a single visit. For apartment owners, we assess the car park electrical setup, advise on circuit feasibility for your specific bay, and help you understand what the strata process involves before you commit to anything.
Note: If you run a business along the Pacific Highway or in the Clarke Street precinct and want to add EV charging for staff or customers, we handle commercial and multi-bay installs. Get in touch and let's scope it out.

Done efficiently and perfectly. I'm very happy that the power is now back on during this awkward period of Christmas rush.

EV Charger FAQ's
The portable cable that comes with most new EVs plugs into a standard 10A or 15A power point and charges at whatever rate that socket can deliver, typically 10 to 15km of range per hour. No installation, no electrician, no extra cost beyond what came in the box.
The case for sticking with portable is real but limited. If you drive a plug-in hybrid with a small battery that only needs topping up 20 to 40km overnight, a standard socket often does the job. If you travel frequently and need a backup charger on the road, the portable cable is a useful thing to carry.
For most full battery EV owners, a fixed Level 2 charger is the right setup for daily use. It charges four to eight times faster, it runs on a dedicated circuit built for sustained high-current draw, and it includes purpose-built RCD protection that a standard domestic socket doesn't provide. Using a domestic socket as the primary charging method for a full BEV places it under a load it wasn't designed for over years of daily use. A standard socket as an occasional backup is fine. As the main method for daily charging, a fixed installation is the better answer.
Every EV has an onboard charger, electronics inside the vehicle that convert AC power from the wall into the DC power that actually goes into the battery. When you plug into a home Level 2 charger, AC power goes into the car and the onboard charger handles the conversion. That's why the vehicle's onboard charger capacity sets the ceiling: a car with a 7.2kW onboard charger will accept 7.2kW regardless of whether the wall unit is rated at 7.2kW or 22kW.
DC fast chargers, like those at public charging stations, bypass the onboard charger entirely. They convert power to DC externally and feed it directly into the battery, which is why they can deliver 50kW, 150kW or more. This speed is what enables a 20-minute top-up at a motorway charger.
For home use, DC fast charging isn't practical. The equipment is large, expensive, and requires three-phase supply at levels that exceed most residential connections. For the majority of EV owners, a 7.2 to 11kW Level 2 charger running overnight is more than enough, because the goal at home is daily replenishment rather than a rapid fill. Public DC chargers are the right tool when you need significant range added quickly during a trip.
Smart EV chargers connect to your home Wi-Fi and provide controls through a smartphone app that a basic charger doesn't offer.
Scheduling is the most commonly used feature. You set a window when electricity rates are cheapest, typically overnight, and the charger starts and stops automatically. Some apps also let you set a charge limit by percentage rather than time, so the battery doesn't sit at 100% for hours if you only need a partial charge.
Energy tracking lets you monitor how much electricity the charger has consumed, broken down by session. This is useful for understanding the real cost of home charging and separating EV use from the rest of your household consumption, which matters if you want to account for it separately or claim it as a work expense.
Remote start and stop let you begin or pause charging from anywhere. If your schedule changes and you need the car earlier than planned, you can adjust without being home. Some apps integrate with the vehicle itself for charge status and notifications. For Crows Nest properties with apartment setups requiring per-user usage logs, some platforms support individual accounts and access management. We can recommend models suited to your specific situation.
You don't need much, but a few details on hand make the conversation faster and let us give a more accurate estimate before the site visit.
The most useful thing is knowing roughly where your main switchboard is and how old it is. If you know it was recently upgraded or if it still has old fuse holders rather than circuit breakers, that's directly relevant to whether additional work is likely before the charger goes in.
Knowing where you park is the other key piece. How far is the parking spot from the switchboard, and is the path fairly direct or does it cross a garden, driveway, or structure? You don't need exact measurements, but a rough sense of the cable run helps us gauge complexity before we see it in person.
If you already have a charger model in mind, the brand and output is useful so we can confirm circuit requirements in advance. If you don't have a preference yet, that's completely fine and we can advise during the assessment. If you're in a strata property, let us know upfront so we can advise on the owners corporation process at the same time as scoping the electrical work.
